OHSAS 18001 Health & Safety Accreditation
To help the Company maintain its BS OHSAS standard
John Pointon & Sons has become one of the first recycling and rendering companies to achieve certification to BS OHSAS 18001:2007 – a renowned occupational health and safety management system from the British Standards Institution (BSI).Health and Safety at work remains a key priority for businesses in the UK, and BS OHSAS 18001:2007 is a proven way of implementing and managing a health and safety system. BS OHSAS 18001:2007 provides a systematic, structured and practical approach to health and safety management, and is widely acknowledged in the manufacturing, construction, service, public and charitable sectors both in the UK and across the world.
An occupational health and safety management framework allows an organisation to consistently identify and control its health and safety risks and reduce the potential for accidents, occupational illness and damage to equipment. Alongside this, it helps companies to achieve compliance with health and safety legislation and reduce or eliminate legal disputes and adverse publicity. Further benefits include improvements in performance and productivity, and positive responses from customers and suppliers.
Barney Williams, Technical Director, said: “To achieve certification to BS OHSAS 18001:2007 we had to thoroughly assess our operations and our approach to health and safety. For example, we looked at how we conduct risk assessments and how we deal with and report hazards, accidents, incidents and emergencies. We have also identified which regulations and legal requirements we need to meet, and have put appropriate training programmes in place."

To help the company achieve certification to the BS OHSAS 18001:2007 standard, Dave Carr, an experienced occupational health and safety manager, was appointed in 2006.
He said: “We now have a fully integrated, robust, effective health and safety management programme in place, with an audit from our insurers confirming that the company has improved dramatically over the past 5 years. We believe this is a significant achievement for a large manufacturing facility, and it demonstrates the management team and the workforce are capable of working as a team, and can continually improve.”
