The purpose of this International Standard is to enable organisations to establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use and consumption. Implementation of this International Standard is intended to lead to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and other related environmental impacts and energy cost through systematic management of energy. Successful implementation depends on commitment from all levels and functions of the organisation, and especially from top management and directors.
This Standard specifies energy management system (EnMS) requirements, upon which an organisation can develop and implement an energy policy, and establish objectives, targets, and action plans which take into account legal requirements and information related to significant energy use. An EnMS enables an organisation to achieve its policy commitments, take action as needed to improve its energy performance and demonstrate the conformity of the system to the requirements of the Standard. The Standard applies to the activities under the control of the organisation, and application of the standard is tailored to fit the specific requirements of the organisation, including the complexity of the system, degree of documentation, and resources.
This International Standard is based on the Plan – Do – Check – Act (PDCA) continual improvement framework and incorporates energy management into everyday organisational practices.
Technical Director, Barney Williams said, “We’ve seen our business reap the rewards from a systematic and methodological focus on energy management. Since we commenced the journey in 2017 we have been rewarded with annual savings of over £750,000. This can only be achieved with a team effort and effective systems. I’m particularly pleased with the ideas put forwards by our Energy Team. The Company has implemented numerous suggestions from team members and the net savings have contributed to our overall annual energy saving target of 10% per annum. Adoption of the ISO50001 standard has given us a proven ability to save money and provide competitively priced products for our customers.
Aside from the two fundamental benefits that an energy management system brings – saving money by using less electrical energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions – there is a third benefit. By adopting the standard, you prove to your customers that your efforts are serious. Measurable results and verifiable system speak for themselves.”
